I was into more organic pub rock and punk, while the rich kids at school were well into Devo, meaning Two: the first album I ever heard on the revolutionary and then all-new Sony Walkman that I borrowed from a rich kid was Devo's Freedom of Choice. So "Girl U Want" was the first song I ever heard swirling about my head in wide stereo.

  3. In the '80s, Devo fans who showed up early for the Freedom of Choice, New Traditionalist, and Oh No! It's Devo tours were treated to some strange pre-show music. Muzak-styled versions of Devo hits were quietly played over the sound system, versions that were so faithful to the Muzak aesthetic that most fans missed them, with the occasional "Is this 'Girl U Want?'' asked .
